A mundan is a child's first haircut — the ceremonial removal of the hair a baby is born with. Families also know it as chudakarana or chaula. For many Hindu families it marks an early milestone in a child's life, and the day usually comes with relatives, cameras and a fair amount of noise.
Barber Gentlemen Salon does one part of that day: the haircut itself. The ceremony belongs to your family — the prayers, the timing and the rituals are led by you or by your priest. What we take responsibility for is that the cut is calm, careful and completely unhurried.
How we handle a mundan
Small children do not sit still because someone asks them to, and we do not expect them to. Our artists work in short bursts, stop the moment your child needs to stop, and start again when they have settled. Nobody at BGS will rush you through it.
We use clippers with a gentle touch and keep the area around the chair calm. If your child is happier on a parent's lap than in the barber chair, that is completely fine — most of ours are, and we cut around it.
A mundan is booked with more time set aside than a standard haircut, so the appointment can take as long as your child needs without anyone watching the clock.
Your family is welcome
Bring whoever needs to be there. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings — a mundan is a family occasion and we would rather the room felt full than empty.
Photographs and video are encouraged. This is a day you will want to look back on, and we will happily pause the cut so someone can get the shot.
How to prepare
A fed and rested child has a far better time than a hungry or tired one, so if you can, book around your child's nap and mealtimes rather than against them.
Bring a favourite toy, or a phone with a familiar video on it — a distraction that already works at home will work here too. A change of clothes is worth having, and something soft to change into afterwards, since fine cut hair can be itchy against the neck.
If your child has a sensitive scalp, eczema, cradle cap or any skin condition, tell us when you book and again when you arrive, so your artist can adjust how they work.

Mundan appointments should be booked ahead by phone rather than walked in. That way we can set aside a longer slot and put the right artist on the chair, instead of fitting a milestone around a busy afternoon.

Common questions
What age is a mundan usually done?
That is decided by your family and your own traditions rather than by us — families differ, and we do not advise on timing. We have cut hair for babies well under one and for older toddlers alike. Whatever age your child is, mention it when you book so we can plan the right amount of time.
Do you shave the head completely, or just trim?
Either — it is your call. Tell us what your family has asked for, whether that is a full shave, a close clipper cut or a light trim, and that is exactly what we will do.
Can family be present during the ceremony?
Yes, and we would encourage it. Relatives are welcome in the salon, and photos and video are fine throughout. We will pause the cut whenever you need us to.
How long does a mundan appointment take?
We set aside more time than a standard haircut, but how long it actually takes depends entirely on your child. If they need breaks, they get breaks — the appointment is built around that rather than a fixed slot.
Do you do mundan for girls as well as boys?
Yes. BGS is a unisex salon and a mundan booking is welcome for any child.
