What a head spa is, in plain terms

A head spa is a treatment for the scalp rather than the haircut. Warm oil is worked into the scalp and along the hairline by hand, slowly and with real pressure, then the hair is washed and conditioned so you leave with the benefit and not the oil. Think of it as the part of a salon visit that usually gets rushed, given the whole appointment instead.

At Barber Gentlemen Salon it comes in three forms. The Hot Oil Head Massage is the twenty-minute version. Add steam and the warmth opens the scalp so the oil sinks in rather than sitting on top. The Hair Spa is the full treatment — massage, a nourishing mask and a proper wash — for hair and scalp that need more than a quick fix. All three are on the men's and women's menus at the same price.

Who books a head spa

Two kinds of guest, mostly. The first comes for the scalp: it feels tight, dry or itchy, the hair is dull at the roots, and no shampoo seems to change it. Oil, warmth and circulation are the oldest answer there is to a scalp that has been neglected, and twenty minutes of it makes a noticeable difference to how the scalp feels.

The second comes for the twenty minutes. The base of the skull is where people carry a long week, and a slow, firm head massage releases it in a way nothing else on a salon menu does. Plenty of our regulars book it at the end of a haircut purely for that.

If you have a diagnosed scalp or skin condition — psoriasis, severe dermatitis, an open wound or an infection — speak to your GP or dermatologist first and tell us when you book. A head spa is a comfort and conditioning treatment, not a medical one, and we will say so rather than promise otherwise.

What happens in the appointment

You sit back at the wash station. Your artist warms the oil and works it through the scalp in sections — the crown, the temples, the hairline, the base of the skull — using the fingertips and the heel of the hand. It is slow on purpose. If you want more or less pressure, say so; this is your twenty minutes.

With the steam option, a warm steam is applied over the oiled scalp for part of the treatment. It feels like a hot towel that keeps going, and it is the version to choose if your scalp is dry or your hair is thick and coarse.

The Hair Spa adds a conditioning mask worked through the lengths and left to process before the wash. Allow longer for it — ask when you book how long we expect yours to take, because it depends on hair length and thickness.

Every version finishes with a wash and conditioner, so you can go straight on with your day, or straight into a haircut. Massage first, then wash, then cut is the order that works best.

Head spa before a haircut

The two pair well and most guests who try the combination keep it. The massage relaxes you and lifts the scalp, the wash leaves the hair clean and workable, and the cut goes on fresh hair. Mention both when you book so we set aside the time rather than squeezing the massage into a cut slot.

Afterwards

Because the oil is washed out in the salon, there is nothing to do afterwards except enjoy a scalp that feels looser than it did. If dryness is a recurring problem, your artist can suggest a gentle shampoo from the ranges we stock and a sensible gap between treatments — for most people that is every few weeks rather than every week.

Common questions

What is the difference between a head spa and a hair spa?

At BGS a head spa is the hot oil scalp massage, with or without steam — it is about the scalp. The Hair Spa is the fuller treatment: the massage plus a conditioning mask through the lengths and a proper wash, for hair that needs nourishing as well as a scalp that needs attention.

How long does a head spa take?

The Hot Oil Head Massage runs around twenty minutes. The steam version takes a little longer, and the Hair Spa longer again depending on your hair's length and thickness — ask when you book and we will tell you what to allow.

How much does a head spa cost in Blacktown?

At Barber Gentlemen Salon the Hot Oil Head Massage is $30, the Hot Oil Head Massage with Steam is $40 and the Hair Spa is $60. The prices are the same for men and women.

Is a head spa good for a dry or flaky scalp?

Warm oil, massage and steam help a dry, tight scalp feel noticeably better, and many guests book it for exactly that. It is a comfort and conditioning treatment, not a medical one — if you have a diagnosed skin condition, see your GP or dermatologist first and let us know when you book.

Can men book a head spa?

Yes. Every head spa service is on the men's menu at the same price, and a hot oil head massage before a haircut is one of the most popular combinations we do.

Do I need to book ahead?

For the twenty-minute massage you can often walk in, but the steam version and the Hair Spa need time set aside — call 0429 180 262 to book. We are open seven days until 8 pm, on Richmond Road opposite Blacktown Showground.
